OH8TA and Taapinen in English

TAapinen in Finglish

You are reading the 30th Anniversary publication of the radio club of technical students in University of Oulu.

The club, "Oulun Teekkarien Radiokerho ry", was established in 1969 by technical students. The club has had a lot of activity during past 30 years, and is nowadays open for all students, even for all "young" people.

By clubs rules, the purpose of the club is to bring together all kinds of radio-hobbies and persons involved with them, but unfortunately almost only radio amateurs are present among the members. The club owns two amateur radio callsigns, OH8TA and OH8T, the latter is reserved for special events only, such as expeditions.

The clubroom and the radio station of the club are located near the University of Oulu, at campus area of Linnanmaa. The place is very nice to visit between the lectures and perhaps during them, and of course after a hard day in work it would be refreshing to have a relaxing moment and check if there are any rare radio stations on-the-air. Of course evening activities and parties are not out of question.

If you want to contact the club, you can email to: oh8ta@oulu.fi. If you are already a radio amateur, and if you have a radio for 2m or 70cm band, you can call the clubstation OH8TA through the local repeaters 434.750MHz (-1.6MHz shift) or 145.750MHz (- 0.6MHz shift). We prefer the first one. You can also reach us by phone, number is +358-40-7533 487.

Club evenings take place in Yliopistokatu 40 every Tuesday, usually after 6 pm. Everyone interested in radios is welcome, no previous radio experience is required!

What is amateur radio?

Since the invention of the radio, some people found it a fascinating "toy", with which you can make contacts to other people and test the possibilities to make longer and longer connections, wireless, by some "strange" methods.

Nowadays radio amateurs are doing about the same. The hobby of amateur radio gives one a possibility to make own technical experiments, maybe inventing something new, at least for oneself. One can make contacts to other radio amateurs on the other side of the globe by using so-called HF-frequencies. These connections could be made using voice, computer assisted text-typing, on Morse code, or by many other methods not to mention here.

Many radio amateurs have also had a work from the hobby. For someone studying technical sciences, it would always be a merit to have interest in technology as a hobby.

You can find more information about amateur radio activity on the Internet, for example from the Finnish Radio Relay Leagues homepage: http://www.sral.fi/indexeng.htm and you can visit our own homepage at http://oh8ta.oulu.fi
